The wind chill factor of software: the infamous 3-second limit
Once again that question: when is software “fast enough”? The answer is simple and merciless: when the user does not notice any slowdown. And that limit is much lower than we all think.
Some time ago, UX research revealed that our brains work with the powers of 10 - time intervals at which users' behavior and attention fundamentally change:
- 0,1 secondd: feels like instantaneous. The user does not notice a delay. Anything below this threshold is experienced as instant response.
- 1 second: still feels fast, but the user notices a slight delay. The system no longer feels “instant,” but it does feel smooth.
- 3 seconds: this is the critical limit. Wait longer than this? Then the user becomes distracted. Attention wanes. Doesn't fit the powers of 10, but it is a proven critical limit. Note: for millennials and Generation Z, this limit is as low as 2 seconds.
- 10 seconds: the user mentally drops out. They look away, grab their phone or click on something else.
- 1 minute: with these kinds of waiting times, the interaction is actually broken. Think timeouts, reloads, or leaving the process completely.
And these numbers are not just some UX babble. The list above applies to all software with direct user interaction: portals, web apps, mobile apps, workplace software.
Why this is important?
Because much modern software - especially in the cloud - greatly exceeds these thresholds. That happens with 100% certainty when you scale, use more data or address multiple systems simultaneously.
Three seconds seems short, but to a user it is an eternity.
Are you making users wait longer than that? Then you lose not only attention, but also productivity, customer satisfaction and ultimately money.
So performance doesn't start with 99.9% uptime. It starts with how fast your software is and therefore feels. And whether that speed is enough to keep people in the right flow.
Slow, expensive and late - the silent damage of non-interactive software

Measuring is knowing - but understanding is striking gold
How do you know if your software is fast enough? It starts - as always - with measurement. Because without measurement data, you're in the dark. You see that the system “feels slow,” but you can't substantiate it, make it tangible. Let alone solve it.
But measurement alone is not enough.
Many tools can show that something is slow. A spike in response time, a delayed database query, a full CPU. But then? Then you have data. But no insight yet. Because the why of the observed data often remains unclear. And without that why, no solution is possible.
To really understand performance, you need specialized knowledge. Of how software works internally. How components work together. How data flows. Where bottlenecks occur. And which optimizations do deliver something and which mainly cost money without results.
As an organization, you don't need that kind of knowledge on a daily basis. At the same time, you cannot do without performance expertise.
